Assistant Art Director

Responsible for the 2nd unit: product detail, use and installation shots, for a series of 26 how-to commercials for Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse.

This experience was a crash course in TV advertising art direction. I learned and performed my duties with challenging time constraints and earned the praise of my Art Director. I worked as part of a large staff (~50) and enhanced my knowledge of rigging and the production process.

  • Over 200 setups for 26 spots in 10 days of shooting.
  • Rigged for complicated stagings, ie: deck power washing or roof vent installation.
  • Acquired props.
  • Created computer illustrations of a lawn sprinkler system.
  • Set-up, configured, and created graphics for computer props used by talent in 1st unit scenes. Directed talent.

Pre-press Consultant

Solved work flow problems and set production standards for the US DOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics to streamline publication of the Transportation Statistics Annual Review (TSAR) 1996, a major deliverable of this government agency.

  • Worked with authors and production staff to coordinate efforts
  • Solved electronic output problems from proprietary GIS systems
  • As a result, TSAR 1996 was published -before- TSAR 1995.

Systems Consultant

Performed Macintosh systems installation, troubleshooting, and consulting as a sub-contractor for a small consulting firm. Clients included Profitt's, TVA, Rubbermaid, and many smaller companies in the Knoxville area. I expediently solved technical problems and performed in stressful environments with panicked clients.

  • Learned common cognitive pitfalls of the MacOS interface and applications through the experiences of many users.
  • Learned how to patiently explain technical concepts to users of all skill levels.
  • Developed intimate knowledge of Macintosh systems.
  • Wrote custom databases to automate subcontractor/contractor/client billing process for use by all consultants.
  • Assembled and maintained toolbox of essential software for all consultants.

Production Designer

Published the 1990 National Personal Transportation Survey (NPTS) Databook for the Federal Highway Administration. Responsible for all aspects of design and production: from translation of original material supplied by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to camera-ready film, ready for press.

Two volumes (approx. 500 pages), published 1993-94.

  • Designed the book for maximum effectiveness as a reference guide with well-designed chapter and section headers, thumbtabs, and other design solutions to enhance usability and information design.
  • Winner 1996 Technical Communication Award for Merit in Technical Reports, Society for Technical Communication, East Tennessee Chapter.
  • Translated files from a variety of word processing packages, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Created Adobe Acrobat version for online distribution.

Provided creative and publishing services to other departments and divisions within the corporation for a mid-sized company specializing in preventative maintenance diagnostic tools for heavy industrial manufacturing equipment. Subsidiaries include MachineView.

  • Created full-color designs and realize them through the printing process.
  • Designed 4-color ads, brochures, and marketing materials.
  • Developed corporate image through definition and consistency of design.
  • Created 3-D models of future products for pre-sale.
  • Directed other creative talent.
  • Directed print production: from concept to film to approval of print samples.

    A promotional brochure describing a hand-held vibration analyzer. Designed, created 3D rendered illustrations, made film, checked press.

Interface and Product Designer

Developed and specified user interface for BookWorm: a series of hypertexting, literature-oriented electronic books, for a start-up company formed with co-workers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Created simulations and prototypes for internal review and trade shows.

  • Developed product's functional and interface design based on feedback from educators, previous research at ORNL, and inspiration from hypertexting research, literature, Mosaic.
  • Created paper and electronic simulations and prototypes for internal review and trade shows.
  • Company published nearly a dozen titles sold nationally.
